(1) Incentive Prize for First-time Director (\1 million and a trophy)
Theatrical films (plotted to solve a “mystery” on such themes as crime, paranormal phenomena, psychology, inner space etc.) under the category of “mystery” in a broad sense are subject to this award. The films must be produced after November 2001 and directed for the first or second time.
Asian films are subject to this award, however, entries from non-Asian countries will be considered positively.
Jurors: Masahiro Shinoda (director), Katsuhiko Takahashi, and Kazuo Kuroi
Finalists: 4 films
(2) Kadokawa Off-theater Competition (\300,000 and a trophy)
Off-theater works (plotted to solve a “mystery” on such themes as crime, paranormal phenomena, psychology, inner space etc.) under the category of “mystery” in a broad sense are subject to this award. The films must be produced after November 2001.
Jurors: Isao Yukisada (director) and Shimako Iwai
Finalists: 5 films
Besides the finalists, other fine nominated works will be shown.
(3) Off-theater Morioka Citizen Award (Cash prize and specialty products of Morioka)
Jurors: Audiences who watch the fine works nominated for the Off-theater Competition are to select one by vote.

Contents: Exhibition of about 60 pieces of valuable ghost movie posters owned by Mr. Takahashi. The gallery will be covered by black-out curtains, and the audience will appreciate the works with a flashlight borrowed at the entrance.
 
(3) Cinema Display Contest
Date: Thursday, October 10 -thr. Sunday, October 20
Location: Oodoori, Saien, Sakana-cho shopping district
Contents: Prizes will be awarded for good window displays and/or interior decoration set up based on the theme of “Movie.” The vote by the general public and the evaluation by the judges will decide the winners.
Prize Money: Gold Prize: \30,000 and a certificate
Silver Prize: \20,000 and a certificate
Copper Prize: \ 10,000 and a certificate
 
(4) Dream Candles Lighting Ceremony (sponsored by Yume-akari Council)
Date: Saturday evening, October 19
Location: Oshimizu Taga’s garden where the Funfest with the guests (tentative name) will be held.
Remark: This event is only for the Funfest participants.

Contents: Book fair for the books written by the writers participating in the festival. Autograph sessions by Shimako Iwai will be held at 2:00 p.m. on October 20 on the 2nd floor of Tosando main bookstore.
 
(7) “The Hunt for ‘“?’” in the Town/ Photo Exhibition” (sponsored by Tanoshii-machino-tanteidan (or Happy Town’s Detectives))
Date: Tuesday, October 15 -thr. Thursday, October 31
Venue: Observation Room at Marios
Contents: Exhibition of the photographs of unique scenes found in the town. Popularity vote by visitors is planned. This is the exhibition that we hope to link to the video preview “A Whole Lot of Japanese Detectives.”
‘Tanoshii-machino-tanteidan’ is a photo club that digs up unique aspects of Morioka. They have held exhibitions along different themes every time.

The background of the film “Haru”: This film, set in Morioka in 1995, is a story of a couple living far away from each other. In this film, they exchange e-mails, which is a common way of communication now. Although the film was produced seven years ago, it doesn’t have an old-fashioned atmosphere. However, you would be surprised by the fact that there are many difference in the scenery of Morioka at that time from that of now.
